Brighter Futures Ahead: IHM’s Transformative Works

Brighter Futures Ahead: IHM’s Transformative Works

In the heart of Cambodia lies a community largely unseen, their stories untold. Dr. Mai-Khanh Tran, a compassionate advocate for change, sheds light on the plight of ethnic Vietnamese living in Cambodia – a stateless group facing unimaginable challenges. Through her words, we embark on a journey of understanding and compassion, fueled by the desire to make a difference.

A World Unseen: Stateless and Forgotten

In the shadows of Cambodia’s vibrant landscapes, a silent struggle rages on. Ethnic Vietnamese, many of whom have lived here for generations, remain stateless, denied even the most fundamental human rights. Deprived of land ownership, healthcare access, education, and formal employment, they navigate life’s harsh currents, often relegated to the margins of society.

From the serene waters of Kampong Luong to the vibrant streets of Phnom Penh, IHM’s team of dedicated healthcare professionals is gearing up to provide crucial medical, dental, and eye care services. Our focus remains on the people living on or near Tonle Sap Lake – a community that holds a special place in our hearts.

It is with great joy and a deep sense of purpose that we announce the ongoing Cambodia Medical Mission 2023, scheduled from August 7th to August 11th. For two decades now, IHM has been committed to extending a helping hand to the less privileged communities, and this year is no exception. We are thrilled to share our mission details and invite you to join us in making a difference in the lives of those in need.

August 7: Co Ho Resettled Community

We begin our mission by reaching out to the resilient souls of the Co Ho community, nestled between Kampong Chhnang and Kampong Luong. Their stories of courage inspire us to serve them better.

2. Nutritional Education: Nourishing the Body and Mind
Education goes beyond books at IHM. We empower our students with knowledge about nutrition, teaching them what to eat for a healthier life. Our recent initiative has focused on the importance of avoiding unhealthy candy and snacks.

3. Safety & Awareness Education: Empowering for Life
Safety is a priority in the floating village, where the challenges of living on water are numerous. We conduct regular safety and awareness workshops to equip our students with essential life skills. From swimming lessons to fire safety drills, our children are becoming adept at handling emergencies. These life-saving skills not only instill confidence but also empower them to protect their families and community.

4. Computer Classes: Unlocking the Digital World
In today’s digital age, access to technology is vital for success. IHM has introduced computer classes to bridge the digital divide in Tonle Sap. Our students now have the opportunity to learn basic computer skills, opening doors to a world of knowledge and future career opportunities.

5. Learning English as Second Language with Teacher Anne
IHM operates a program called “Learning English as a Second Language” in Tonle Sap Lake, Cambodia. Due to limited access to quality education, these children face significant obstacles in pursuing higher education, securing better job prospects, and engaging globally. The organization aims to empower these children and their communities by providing them with the necessary language skills and self-assurance.

6. The Trung Thu Moon Festival
Every Vietnamese child dreams about an amazing Tết Trung Thu with his or her own brightly lit lantern and a belly full of mooncakes. Tết Trung Thu or Mid-autumn Festival, is also known in Vietnam as the “Children’s Festival”. Our students joyfully celebrated this day at school.

7. Parents & Teachers’ Education & Conference: Fostering Partnerships
Education is a collective effort, and at IHM, we believe in fostering strong partnerships between parents and teachers. We regularly organize conferences where parents and teachers come together to discuss their children’s progress and share valuable insights.

8. Parents’ Meeting and Gift Distribution
On October 4, 2023 IHM organized a meeting of parents and students to talk about the students’ education and also distribute rice & gifts to the families

As we reflect on our journey and the incredible strides made over the years, we are reminded that none of this would have been possible without your unwavering support. Your generous contributions have transformed lives and created a ripple effect of hope and opportunity in Tonle Sap.

Thank you for being a part of our mission to uplift the impoverished communities living on and near the Tonle Sap Lake through education. Together, we are lighting the path towards a brighter future.

Thank you for making this journey with us.
